I’ve seen more men in the shop in the past week than we have since we opened the doors almost six months ago. Like just about everything about opening this “all things underthings” store, this influx of male shoppers is a new experience.
Some have come in very sure of what to get you. There has been the guy so psyched about getting you a gift certificate – he heard our radio ad on WEQX and remembers you saying you need new bras. He was positively giddy about buying it because he thinks you are going to be so surprised that he actually thought of this kind of gift AND actually walked into a shop like JOY to get it. There’s been the other guy who was very VERY specific about the type of robe he wanted to get you down to fabric content, stitching, washing instructions, etc. Not sure if you gave him a list, if he just has good taste, or if he’s made some sort of “robe-buying mistake” in the past, but, boy oh boy, he really REALLY wanted to get you the right housecoat!
Most men aren’t sure what to get you when they walk in, but then something strikes their eye, and I probably don’t have to tell you, ladies…it’s probably not what you’d pick out for yourselves.
I’ve received lingerie as a gift twice in my 47 years (sorry, Mom and Dad if you are reading this) and remember having the sick-stomached sentiment both times of “oh God, I can’t wear this” as I pulled the pretty little things out of the box. Being on the other side now of actually seeing these guys pick these things out for you at the shop, I gotta tell you, sisters…your man loves you if he is buying you lingerie. They LOVE you. No matter how YOU feel about your body, these guys love YOU. And they really REALLY want to do the right thing. If I had just believed that instead of thinking about how not perfect my body was when I opened those boxes, well….who knows…
If you receive a little “somthin’ somethin’” this year or in years to come, instead of thinking “oh God, I can’t wear this,” how about believing, “wow, he loves me.”
You are beautiful. They love you.
Believe.
Love,
Joy
