We haven’t quite figured out the online shopping thing so we still take orders the old fashioned way – on the phone. A call came in last Friday about 5:30 p.m. and Julie sprang into action despite a long day at the shop and a dark afternoon outside. I heard half of the conversation…here’s how that went:
“JOY all things underthings, this is Julie.”
(Julie listens and nods…)
“Yes, we can ship it and we can look up her purchases and see her size and the style she likes.”
(Julie on computer… click click click)
“Ok, I see what she purchased – let me check what we have, but I see she already has three colors in one of them.”
(Julie goes to the bra wall…pulls down one, double checks the size, and stretches out her arm as if to step back and admire it.)
“You know, we have this new bra that a lot of people like in this size. I know she likes the ones she has, but this one is special and would be a nice gift.”
(Julie listens and nods on the phone)
“If it doesn’t work, she can exchange it. You two will just have to come back to Manchester…” (laugh laugh laugh…It seemed like “coming back to Manchester” wasn’t such a bad thing…)
(Julie’s southern accent comes out….) “You know what….I just have a lot of faith in this bra. I can gift wrap it and you’ll both be surprised. (laugh laugh laugh) “I think she’s going to love it.”
Julie rang the transaction, assured the woman it would be in the mail the next morning, and wished her a Merry Christmas by name. It was obvious that Julie felt really good about what just happened. She should have – she had basically just become Santa Claus.
(From the gift wrap area where she was busy taping and tying) “… Now here’s a woman who SAT DOWN a week before Christmas and PICKED UP THE PHONE to call a local store to order a bra for her daughter. With all the talk about the internet and people being too busy, this woman took time out …picked up the phone… and called US so she could give her DAUGHTER…a BRA…for CHRISTMAS…”
The word faith popped into my mind: the caller had it in our shop, Julie had it in that bra, and the caller trusted Julie on the pick with no visuals to boot. That’s a lot of faith. Plus, in an instant, my faith that I had done the right thing by opening this bra shop multiplied.
I just looked it up – “faith” is confidence or trust in a person or thing. We might be old school taking orders by phone, but you know what? I’ll take the faith that comes with a phone order any day.
Grateful for the call. Appreciate you dialing us up. That Julie sure does wrap a pretty gift.
Faithfully,
Joy
PS: The caller called again yesterday to say it had arrived. We had faith it would, but it was nice to hear from her, and wish her Merry Christmas one more time.
