I remember when I saw my first petal top. I was at the counter in the lingerie department at a Nordstrom in Los Angeles about ten years ago. I looked at the display in front of the register that showcased these nipple concealer things called “Petals.” My life was changed forever.
I’m one of those women who have pointy nipples. Before I discovered petals, I would search for bras with the thickest cup when I went shopping. I recall asking the clerk at the counter if the “petals” really worked. (Actually, what I really said was, “Are you kidding? Are you kidding?” over and over because I was so elated at finding such a thing.) She said she sold them all the time. I joyously grabbed two pairs.
Since I started wearing petals, I think my golf game has improved. That’s no joke. I walk to the tee box with a little more confidence knowing that I’m not nipping out through my sports bra. Since I started wearing petals, I mix in lighter and and more lacy bras with my padded ones. It might sound crazy, but many days (and nights) those lighter and lacy bras just feel better. I pretty much wear petals every day regardless of what bra I wear because somewhere along my way to the age of 50, my nipples have become even more pointy. There isn’t enough padding in a lot of bras to conceal these two anymore.
Now that I own this bra shop, I realize I am not alone in this pointy nipple thing. I also realize that those softer cup bras actually fit many women a lot better than a padded one ever could. Maybe someday we won’t care if we nip out or not. For now, a lot of us do.
